Set against the backdrop of old Mexico the story unfolds amid the cultural-ethnicity of the far removed indigenous community of Tezcatlipocas populated by colorful characters and where gods and goddesses work in mysterious ways. Owing to an ill-fated stroke of bad luck, four-year old Rickey Barron is left alone in the care of a village woman who sincerely believes that this small boy has been delivered into her care by the Black Goddess and she will protect him from anyone who would take him from her. Seen through the eyes of Rickey Barron, the life of poverty, of coming of age, and living among the unfortunate peoples of Mexico City gives a slight glimpse into what it takes to survive daily life. And all without the knowledge that throughout the years, his father has been desperately attempting to locate him.
